Dixie gunworks offers some nipples with oversize threads for the 1/4-28 (.250-28) thread. Today the hook-breech is used mainly on halfstock rifles and shotguns so the barrels can be quickly removed. When you have a fullstock rifle there will be very few times when you want to remove the barrel.The dovetails on a CVA Hawken are metric (don't know the exact size) smaller than the 3/8 sights most suppliers have. I bought the 3/8 and with a little judicious filing on them they fit the CVA dovetails. I didn't want to enlarge the dovetails in case I went back to the stock sights. The front & rear are the same size.The patent breech in percussion guns is safer and easier to clean. Drum and nipple breeches are manure from several perspectives. Most modern patent breeches on the factory made guns are designed to be cheap to make and install. The final step in preparing the distressed barrel was to sand it down using various grits of sand paper, from 100 down to 220. Step two was to clean/de-grease the surface thoroughly and plug the muzzle and touch hole. Then I applied cold browning solution. I use the stuff from Dixie because it works very well.Central pa. To accommodate for the patching, the actual bullet diameter is under .458, and varies somewhat depending on bullet weight, etc. Bullet weights vary from 450-550 grains.
